Marc Debusschere started off his career doing scientific research for some years in the discipline he graduated in, experimental social psychology. After a brief stint as a clinical psychologist while serving in the Belgian army, he entered Statistics Belgium where consecutively he held the functions of statistician in industrial statistics, Head of the Short Term Indicators Unit, Director of the Information & Communication Division and spokesperson for Statistics Belgium, and Quality Manager responsible for the Belgian input in the peer reviews of the European Statistical System. He then went to work for six years in the Dissemination unit of Eurostat, the EU statistical office in Luxembourg, where he created the 24-language electronic publications platform and website ‘Statistics Explained’. After returning to Statistics Belgium, he became Coordinator Administrative & Big Data, with an ever-growing focus on the so-called ‘third data revolution’, the integration of big data in official statistics and their transformation into ‘smart statistics’.
